Short stories: Family – Part 1
Ra Ra El and Bob hadn’t until now noticed that Sos had apparently disappeared but they let it pass, not wishing to get on the wrong side of any of the assorted seemingly-nice allegedly-villainous folk about this place. Besides, both Bob and Ra Ra El seemed to know that whatever Sos was up to was not, ultimately, their problem.
The planetoid was a marvellous thing to drive across in an open-top sports car (all the taxis were open-top sports cars) – for ‘in the night sky’ you could just about make out the walls, floor and ceiling of the cavern inside which the planetoid miraculously hovered. The car soon pulled up in the middle of the forecourt of a New Age Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsMemoirs: A ski story
Crossing the New Jersey-Pennsylvania state line at the Delaware Water Gap, I paralleled the muddy-appearing Delaware River near the Appalachian Trail, the interstate narrowing to two lanes and shallowly ascending into the brown-treed, gray shale rock-covered Pocono Mountains, the slender, finger-like white patterns representing the still-snow-covered ski trails of Camelback Mountain now visible through the left car window. As the miles rolled by, I thought of the past two ski trips, trips which had been highlighted, (perhaps “warped” is the better word) by the personalities of my group. Put them on skis and they excelled in more ways than you can imagine. Did I dare subject myself to them again? I could have turned round right now… The descending, right-curving Read the rest of this entry »

The Bats of Austin
I have spent the past 30 years travelling the world and have many stories to tell. For instance, Amtraking around America, in 2001, someone suggested that my friend and I should go to Austin to “see the bats”. Austin, capital of Texas, was not far off our intended route and when told that bat watching was something of a tourist attraction there, we wanted to know more. In Austin we were directed to Congress Bridge, the “best place to see the bats,” the hotel staff said.
The gathering began at 6.30 p.m. We bagged a spot on a grassy patch and spent some time peering up at the crevices under the bridge, which is where they slept, we’d Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsHumor: The joys of air travel
Last summer I had reservations for a week long marketing seminar in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. Unable to obtain a direct flight several weeks in advance I settled for Dayton to Philadelphia via Atlanta. The only option was spend a whole day driving to and fro. On a direct flight Philly is a one hour jaunt. Having not flown since before 9/11, I prepared by checking airline rules and regs and chatting with a few frequent flier friends. I knew better than to expect a wide body aircraft for the short hops but was hoping for a nice twin engine jet that had two abreast seating on either side of the aisle.
After boarding I located row 9 Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsTestimonies: Meeting Linda Gray
I work in an environment where I come into contact with celebrities on a daily basis, I work as a mid level manager in a boutique hotel. Better still I work in the only destination hotel in the town I live in. The hotel only opened last summer and within a few weeks a whole string of big names had passed through my doors. Some were pleasant and some were not so pleasant, there were diva’s and then there was the lovely Linda Gray.
For those that know the name but can’t put a name to this actress, Linda is best known for her role as Sue Ellen Ewing in the show Dallas. Not so much working on TV Read the rest of this entry »

Into the Sahara
The blowing sand rocks our Land Rover as we reach the outskirts of Timbuctou.
Mahkmoud leans over the steering wheel and peers into the hazy lemon yellow that fills our windshield. There is no horizon between earth and sky and I wonder how he can continue to drive with no reference points, yet on he goes with the instinct of a desert nomad. I realize for him, this is normal.
He tells me these storms can last for days but I do not care. I have finally reached one of the oldest and most remote cities on earth, so let it blow.
I have come to see the Tuareg, The Blue Men of the Sahara, an ancient Berber Read the rest of this entry »

Several years ago, my husband and I saved for months to go on a holiday to Bali. I hate flying so was petrified on arrival at the Perth airport. As, it was mother’s day, they had free samples of wild turkey for the women. To help my nerves, I consumed some to give me Dutch courage, and bought more from the duty free shop.
We had a good flight, except for the nerves. On landing, I carefully carried the bag containing the alcohol through customs, and waited for our bemo for transit to our hotel.
My husband saw liquid on the ground, the bottles in the bag had broken. I had been a little rough (hick) when Read the rest of this entry »

Bob and Ra Ra El were shown out through the back door, leading out into a strange group of gardens – the gardens of illusion. Back in the master’s chamber, however, dessert was not going as well as one may have expected. For the recently departed Kaiser Sos had, having taken his bride to a paradise planet where they would later live quietly, returned to the Hotel California to do one last deed of gangster overlordhood
Before anything else at all he shot the master dead, along with all his men. This done he went, accompanied by his accomplice, the Night Porter, to each of the various hellish chambers wherein so many prisoners were held by their own foolish low-esteem and Read the rest of this entry »
