No CommentsDining out etiquette: How to behave stylishly at restaurants
Don’t you hate it when you go out for a nice quiet dinner and end up being part of the restaurant entertainment? Saturday night Mark and I decided to check out a restaurant recommended by a friend, for it’s great food and quiet ambieance. Well, in Chandler, on a Saturday night, there is no such thing as quiet anything, in regards to restaurants. This place was no different, but had a nice patio with a fireplace and only a few people out there. So we decided to eat outside. We chose a table in the far corner, in effort to have a little privacy and talk. It was really nice until the “restaurant entertainer” set up his one man band Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsA guide to Australian cuisine
We’ll start our tour of Australian cuisine in Sydney, the countries largest city, famous for it’s harbor, and the glamorous opera house that is its centerpiece. As a cosmopolitan center, there are many world class restaurants of every type and specialty. If you’re longing for your favorite Italian, Japanese, or French meal and atmosphere, no worry mate.
Since the waterfront is so central to Sydney, we’ll visit the historic “Rocks” district for our night on the town. Dating back to the “convict” days, Rocks was at one time, a bawdy working port area. Now tourists come for its many shops and restaurants.
Including the “Hero of Waterloo”, at 81 Lower Fort Street. It may, or may not, Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsItalian food recipes: Caprese Salad
Capri is a wonderful island not too far from Naples. You can easily get there from the port of Naples via a 45 minute ferry. I was there last year and I will never forget the charm of this little town. Everybody should go there one day, in my opinion it is one of the seven wonders of Italy and one of Italy’s best kept secrets. Well, I must admit perhaps it is no longer a secret, as the “piazetta” which is the town square was always pretty abundant of tourists from all over the world. Even famous actors and singers enjoy a visit in Capri and they spend the night in its very expensive hotels or shop in Read the rest of this entry »

Bobby Flay is Food Network’s top celebrity chef with hit shows such as Throwdown, Boy Meets Grill and The Next Food Network Star. Despite being a critically acclaimed chef/restaurateur, he is also an award winning cookbook author and television personality. At age 17, Bobby first discovered his culinary talent working in many NYC restaurants; one was the Joe Allen Restaurant in Manhattan where he began to develop his own style of American southwestern food. Flay’s good impression on Allen would let him pay the young cook’s tuition at the French Culinary Institute. Later on, Flay would eventually lead himself to open his very own restaurant called the Mesa Grill. This earned him widespread fame, and the Mesa Grill earned the Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsDrink recipes: Gibson
The true origin of the Gibson cocktail is disputed however it does date back to the year 1904 when the dinner menu for the Piedmont hotel was printed in the Atlanta Constitution. The menu for the evening included the Gibson cocktail.
It is thought that the Gibson was named for the famous “Gibson Girls” illustrations by artist Charles Dana Gibson, who was a very popular artist in that era. His illustrations were featured in various magazines who fought for exclusive rights to the illustrations. The artist described the girls as “The American Girl to all the world”. The appeal of the Gibson Girls was that they appeared to be strong, independent women during a period when some women were beginning to Read the rest of this entry »

No CommentsRecipes: Creme brulee French toast
What a perfect dish for a special breakfast or brunch crme brulee French toast. Wonderfully rich and indulgent, sweet and luxurious.
Be warned eating this kind of food often is not good for you but if you save this naughty dish for a New Years Day treat with a glass of champagne or a Bucks Fizz it won’t do too much harm.
You can vary this dish to suit your own tastes but you do need to be able to make a good custard. As the basis of the dish it has to be right; get this wrong and you’ll be disappointed.
I’ve never used a complete recipe to make crme brulee French toast but I created my own version after Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsRestaurant reviews: Fire and Ice, Providence, Rhode Island
Part of a very small New England chain Fire and Ice is probably my all time favorite restaurant. I was at a conference in Providence several years ago and we discovered this restaurant while staying at the Westin Hotel. It is located on the street level of the Providence Place Mall.
The decor is funky, think 60’s sort of psychedelic funky with a strangely Caribbean twist. This may all sound a bit off but don’t worry by the time you leave it will all make perfect sense.
The food here is cooked on a large grill in the center of the room. When you are seated you will be given some chips to munch on while you wait Read the rest of this entry »
