Benefits: Evaluating a job offer

Assuming you are in a position to “take it or leave it” (e.g. you are already in employment), there are things to consider above and beyond the obvious two issues of salary and job role. A checklist of things to consider could be:

1. Is the employment secure?

There is little point on taking the job if you are going to be unemployed in six months.

2. Personal circumstances

For example, are you able/willing to commute? Are you in the process of applying for a loan or mortgage (many companies will not grant a loan if you are on a probationary period).

3. First impressions of the organisation

Did it appear friendly? Was there a supportive atmosphere?

4. Progression opportunities

Combining career & travel: Top jobs to see the world

Top Five Jobs to See the World.

Love travel? Sick of nine to five? These five amazing jobs allow you to indulge in your passion for exploring while you earn a living.

1. Travel writer

Become a travel writer; visit all those places you’ve always dreamed of and make a living from it too. Even an annual holiday can be transformed into an interesting article to be sold to many travel magazines. Most women’s magazines have travel/lifestyle sections as well. Armed with a great idea for an article or angle that hasn’t been covered thoroughly (or at all) approach magazines and they may subsidize your trip. Travel agencies, airlines, resorts and hotels may offer discounted prices or free trips if their Read the rest of this entry »

How our jobs sometimes rob us of our lifestyles

YOUNG PEOPLE, JOBS AND TIME OFF!

I am a mother of a 18 year old, soon to be 19. She has been working 2 part-time jobs for a little over a month. One she has had for awhile at a gas station, the second job is at a hotel cleaning rooms. She opted to take the second job on her own because was tired of not having enough money on hand.

Her first job is only two hours a night. She likes both jobs, but when it seems that are interfering with her sleep or playtime, she makes bad decisions. She never leaves anyone hanging; she finds someone to cover. The thing is, this morning her boss from her Read the rest of this entry »

Sharing job experiences and recommendations

SAFE MODELING

Your personal safety should be paramount in your mind at all times. The key point to remember is that if you are being booked by a genuine commercial photographer you should never experience any problem.

However, we would always suggest the following steps:

Always make sure that you know exactly what the photographer expects from you.Don’t be embarrassed to ask for clarification on any point you are unsure on. It removes the risk that you and the photographer genuinely have different perceptions of what you have been booked for.

Always speak to the booking photographer by telephone prior to agreeing to a shoot.

Never shoot in a hotel room or private house unless you know or have worked with the photographerbefore.

How to be realistic about your job search

I go back a long, long way in surviving the battles of job searches. I can clearly remember my early frustrations of looking for work. First, it was as a new high school grad, and I knew I could only work a month or two before my application to enlist in the Navy would come through. The first secret in being realistic about looking for a job is to be a good liar. Sorry to put it that way, but it is for self-preservation, as long as your lies don’t involve blatant inability to do the job you’re seeking.

I didn’t have anyone to support me for those months, so I fibbed to prospective employers that I had medical problems Read the rest of this entry »

Job search: Tips for negotiating vacation time

C’mon. How many job applicants pick that highly inopportune moment to try to negotiate for vacation time? In my many years of interviewing prospective employees, the subject never came up. It could be because our company had a very structured vacation plan, depending on time of service, but I don’t think so.

When I was being interviewed for jobs, I never dared to bring up the subject. Maybe I’m prejudiced as a former employer, but I’m not sure I’d feel positive about an applicant who blurted out the subject when he/she hadn’t been hired yet.

There are occasions when vacation time often can be negotiated. After a person is employed and has been with the job for awhile, then Read the rest of this entry »

Earn $1000 in a day

I’ve played poker my whole life; I’ve always enjoyed the skill in outwitting another at the table. The most important piece of the puzzle if you are looking to make money at playing hold em is to have one important trait on your side, time. The second most important thing is to have the fortune of playing with loose novices. One of these you can control, the other is luck, or is it?

I think I’ve discovered an almost surefire way to make money at hold em. On a recent trip to New Orleans for business, I stayed at a hotel near Bourbon St. (where else would you stay in New Orleans). Just a few blocks down the street was a Read the rest of this entry »

Combining career & travel: Top jobs to see the world – Part 1

The top way to combine a career with travel is to join the military. At the age of 19 I joined the Navy and my world tour began. I first was sent to Florida to boot camp. Although I didn’t get to see much of Florida, I did get to know their weather… HOT! After going through a short school there in Florida I received my orders. This is a packet that contains your duty station and where you will spend the next few years of your life. Fortunately for me, my boat was in the middle of a wes-pac and this would mean I flying to meet up with it. I went Read the rest of this entry »

Careers: Covering for an incompetent boss

I worked for an incompetent boss for more than ten years. Well, he wasn’t exactly incompetent in his professional skills, just incompetent with the waste of his on-the-job time. Assuming it was his privilege, he sat around every morning reading the newspapers, had a long, often liquid, lunch, and when he felt like it, he went around the division in the afternoon looking regal.

We did several trade shows a year in resort hotels. Preparations were extensive, including building displays, writing executive speeches and preparing video presentations. My boss did absolutely nothing during the heavy work time before we left for the trade shows. When we were on site, he never helped the rest of the crew set up. However, he Read the rest of this entry »

Finding the best jobs for your personality type

Finding a job is stressful. Sometimes you take any position to make ends meet, but your inner voice says, keep searching for the job that fits you.

First and for most you need to have a serious heart to heart discussion with yourself. Keep a notebook out at all times, so you can jot down the pros and cons of past positions. Be honest with yourself. Are you more comfortable in a big place or a smaller environment. Write in detail everything you like to do. Are you a people person. Write down what your strengths and weaknesses are. Go back and read your list. It may surprise you. You might find that the past positions really did not suit your Read the rest of this entry »
